CancerCare MB Charity Calendar - Mikaela
CancerCare MB Charity Calendar - Mikaela
I have been taking pictures since I was little, but I didn’t realize it was my passion until grade nine. Photography was fun, but between work, school, and the “social life” of a teenager, I didn’t see myself having enough time to do it. When it was proposed to me that I could do the thing I loved during school hours, It was a no brainer.
I wanted to make a calendar, sell it, and donate the proceeds to a charity. I planned to research and accomplish twelve different photography techniques – one fore each month of the year. I also reached out to several local charities, and decided to work with The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. On the side I was also going to create a social media account on Instagram and develop a portfolio.
I had to learn two new programs to achieve my goal. I designed the template of my calendar in Adobe illustrator and constructed the calendar in Adobe InDesign with no prior knowledge of the two apps. I self-taught myself how to use them and got to work. My initial goal so to donate $150 – a modest goal, but I thought it would be better to underestimate. I didn’t know I would blow that amount out of the water. I ended up donating $1000 to ovarian cancer research. To see more of my photography go check out my portfolio and my Instagram:

I would have never guessed that I was going to drop off a check let alone write a check for one thousand dollars to a charity that I have so much respect towards. The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation does so much for families that are affected by cancer, a disease that touches so many people. After The semester ends, I will continue to develop my skills in photography trying new techniques. Who knows maybe I’ll make one? I am incredibly proud of the outcome I had during this process. The learning I did in this program will help me for the rest of my life, whether I become a photographer or not. I am forever grateful to my teacher and my peers In Propel. Thank you for the opportunity to show me what I am capable of.
