Janine - Spoken Word Poetry
Janine’s project focused on making her poetry more accessible to the public. She accomplished this by learning how to film and edit poetry videos for YouTube, and performing her poetry at many events across the city. Janine’s passion lies within Intersectional feminist causes, as well as LGBTQ* and environmental issues. She performed poetry at events such as “It’s OK to Rant” and “Défilé Diversité” at St Boniface University. She has reached out to community by speaking at conferences and open mics (“Youth Voice Unite”, “Encore” open mic, “Green Reel”, “Colloque jeunessse sur l’inclusion”).
As a part of “I Have to be Me,” a Manitoban GSA gathering, Janine organized, performed, and aggregated resources packs for students attending the event. As youth voice and activism are something Janine feels very strongly about, she created and facilitated a workshop on “Identity and Spoken Word” for grade nine students attending Westwood Collegiate. Janine has improved her poetry by developing different tones and intonations so that she has a variety of ways to communicate her message to her growing audience. She has further utilized this by writing 5 new poems on these topics. To conclude the semester Janine, led the Pride parade and helped to facilitate a youth workshop on the topic of Identity for junior high students in the city.
