Donovan’s goal was to craft three short stories connected together through a unique technique. By incorporating the “Rashomon Effect,” Donovan is able to offer a significant amount of subtext in his work. Rashomon Effect is one singular story, but retold from different perspectives. To incorporate such a style is difficult in writing, but that was the point. This was why Donovan took Propel. He challenged himself with a format he had never used before in his writing.
The three short stories depict three different characters, each with their own art style to accompany them. Utilizing different art styles for the illustrations pushes the idea of multiple perspectives even further. Each style represents the character’s personality and ideals. The images intertwine with one another as well as the story. The main plot exists as a guide. The multiple perspectives create branches allowing the reader to gain insight as to why characters do what they do.
The story is set in a fictional world allowing more freedom in the writing. Donovan has researched real life topics in which to incorporate into the story. Such topics include: Racial Injustices, Stigma around Mental Health, and Political Manipulation. Using fiction to tackle multiple topics was the centre point in Donovan’s project. The Rashomon Effect is an extremely important tool in his process. Without it, he wouldn’t be able to provide the insight necessary to drive his points home.
