Claire Sutton - Video Game Design

My Propel project was based around learning game development and making a video game of my own. I set out to make a 2D platformer, with randomly ordered levels to create a different gameplay experience every time you play. As the player, you have three lives before needing to restart the game, and the objective is to get as far through as you can without dying. Having the choice to go through bonus, “extra difficult” levels for an extra life at the risk of falling and losing lives adds decision-making to the game.  My main goal for my game was for it to be an enjoyable experience for the player and have replay value. I wanted it to feel like a complete game and not just a demo, including things like a title screen, the ability to pause, and save data. I focused more on experiencing the process of making a video game start to finish and less on the final product. Knowing the work that needs to go into a game was an important thing that I wanted to learn as a part of my project.
